I was reading one of my favorite size acceptance blogs, The Rotund, and ran across a couple of good posts about how no one person can be the authority on what’s en vogue and what isn’t (Post 1 and Post 2). I do agree, with some provisions.
I don’t feel personally attacked by either post on the site, but I did figure I ought to go ahead and make a statement just in case anyone has any misgivings about my personal mission for Fat Stylist.
The posts got me to thinking that people do indeed make the fashion and style. Power to the people! And it just so happens that I am one of those people.
My mission here is not to instruct, so much as it is to give wardrobe ideas and to help answer wardrobe questions. People of all sizes do have wardrobe questions. I know because I receive them in my inbox on a regular basis. If you could care less about fashion then, that’s cool and I’ve been there and sometimes end up back there for no apparent reason. Still, I have a passion for, well, fashion and I like following trends and figuring out what trends work for women of size. It’s fun to me!
The Rotund goes on to say in one of her posts that if she were the or a style authority she would dress everyone like the movie Velvet Goldmine. Well, I wish to God she did because everyday life would be a lot more fun if people took those risks with their style.
But yeah, there are people who are imaginative and fashion forward and they do want some style checks and balances now and again. Also, I think my writing can offer a bit of humor to a very frustrating situation. I may be extremely bold in assuming that, but I certainly mean to make shopping for clothes a bit lighter to bear.
I’ve struggled with my overall mission with this site because I never wanted to be confused with a fashion totalitarian. Perhaps I should have called myself A Fat Stylist instead. You (smart, gorgeous, sexy you) can wear whatever you want, but if you’re looking for help (and wanting help makes you no less amazing because no one is everything all the time), well then, hello there! Please stay with us. We have some ideas to share.
If I could only change one thing about the fashions and styles available to plus sizes it’d be to have more, More, MORE! More styles in a variety of sizes. Because I (and other women) just want to wear cute stuff despite size. And cute stuff is verrrry few and verrrry far between after a certain number. That’s what I want to change and that’s what I talk about in between highlighting wardrobe ideas.
The Rotund’s point is well taken. People are their own authority, style and fashion included. I just feel that I have a lot of ideas to share (just like The Rotund does) so I’m sharing them and, really, where’s the harm in that?
Editor’s Note: Y’all, I might be just this crazy after having no internet for so long and I may have spoken up when I didn’t really have to and all that, but I figured since I already had it on my mind I might as well just drop in a line.
