Famous full-figure: Bridget Jones’s Diary

Until recently, I’ll admit that I was never going to admit to watching Bridget Jones’s Diary. Why? Because I’ve never been one of those girls. Know what I mean? I don’t live for chick flicks. Not even close, but I have to ‘fess up. I saw it and I loved it. Yes, loved it.

The setting was right. I had been vegging out all day. I moved from this seat to that sofa and I had read every last fashion magazine and blog I could. I flipped on the t.v. and for some reason Oxygen was having a Bridget Jones’s Diary marathon all weekend long and I thought, well what the hell! I’ll give ‘er a try.

From the opening sequence of Ms. Jones’ lip-synching her heart out to ‘All By Myself’ I was won over by the charm of the movie. It’s definitely a modern classic. I kind of can’t believe I waited so long to see it– it’s just that endearing to me!

There weren’t any of those “painful” moments like most romantic comedies have. Even the parts that are supposed to be awkward just come across as genuinely funny. She said and did the things I would wish I could do and say in my own life. Bridget Jones should be commended for that.

While all this is well and good, I can’t really believe she was ever supposed to be fat. I mean, did you catch her in that bunny outfit? So. Not. Fat. I realize that this was the “after” Bridget, but she was still supposed to be plump in our eyes. Later, when she finds out her man is cheating on her, the other woman says, “I thought you said she was thin.” Come on. That’s fat?!

I’m not buying the “she was so fat” allegations Hollywood made about Renee Zellweger for her part as Bridget Jones because that’s simply not true. She was so fat is different from she gained so much weight. I believe the latter is a much more accurate description of what went on here. But let’s be real, a size 8 does not a plus gal make.

Still, even the notion that plump can be sexy is a fantastic statement to make. I just wish they went all the way with the idea and didn’t settle for halfway there or at least had curbed the whole “she’s not thin” message the antagonists shouted when clearly she was not fat by any means.

In this case, my love of the movie is separate from my thoughts on the portrayal. The movie is fairly brilliant, but from a lady of size standpoint, Bridget Jones should have actually been fat.

I dunno, from what I read in the novel, it seemed that part of the ‘problem’ with Bridget is that she isn’t fat, but thinks she is — like so many women (that aren’t size 4 or below).

also, if you ever read the book it’s even more ridiculous. if i remember correctly she antagonizes over being something like 134 pounds instead of 132.

I too avoided seeing the film for a really long time — I’d started the book and didn’t like it much, and I’m not much for chick-flicks either. I was so shocked — I’d heard (without trying to pay much attention to it) all the media buzz about all the weight she put on for the film, bla bla bla. She looks so amazingly good in the movie. It’s one of those moments where you just have to jump up and down for a minute until the anger subsides — (a) what is with that being called fat? (b) what’s wrong with having a fat woman in a film? c’mon! siiiiiigh. nothing to do but grumble, ‘when I start making movies….”

    Gina got it spot on,
Bridget thinks she is fat and undesirable. She has the problem that so many of us have- hence why so many of us can relate- that we think we need to satisfy the hollywood stereotype of wafer thin with stick insect arms.
But the men in her life are gagging for her, because she is a luscious curvy funny woman- hell WE all fell in love with her, so why wouldn’t men?
