This is a man’s world

For the last couple of seasons, and especially the coming Fall 08 season, menswear has ruled as a source of inspiration for many runway looks. Elena Miro’s ready-to-wear collection is no exception. I first learned of Miro while reading Too Fat For Fashion and was instantly won by the designer’s love of masculine foundation but tailored to fit a woman’s curves. Her pieces are bold and are undeniable takes on masculine uniforms.

I think this is a great translation of a man’s suit and coat for a plus-size frame and the feminine touches (like the bright pink satin top or a fur shawl) balance the whole theme. My favorite look is probably Miro’s take on a bus driver’s uniform. The jacket is just so cool.

I wish we (Americans) had an equivalent to Elena Miro, but I’m drawing a blank. I don’t know of any apparel manufacturers that makes plus collections at this level. Lane Bryant is about as close as it gets and I’m totally pissed about the crap they’ve been churning out lately… not cute. In general and in the entire world, I feel there’s a huge space available to many apparel manufacturers to step it up and start or expand their lines into plus-sizes.

Aren’t we all just tired of ugly, uninspired clothes? I think designers like Elena Miro bring another dimension to the market and gives their shoppers more than a baby doll shirt to buy.
