First Impressions

StylistJr here. Although the Fatstylist has a handle on giving the 411 on dressing to your potential, I have been recruited to help out with the finishing touches. It takes a considerable amount time, money and effort to ensure that we look flawless. It’s easier to roll out of bed and to keep it moving. I’m here to dish out easy skincare, makeup and lifestyle tips that are the next best thing to the fresh from slumber look that also ensure that you look way better. So lets get started.

I’ve realized that adults don’t properly value bath time. As a kid it is an event. You’re plopped in the tub with your favorite toys and your scented bubble bath du jour. You’re in no rush to scrub up, and you’re allowed to properly wind down from all of that daily over stimulation. Somehow this whole ritual is thrown out the window on the way to adulthood.

Partly because I enjoy not feeling rushed, but mostly because I’m not a morning person, I’ve become a nighttime shower…er, and I highly recommend it! If you do so, you’ll realize that you have more time to indulge in more beauty treatments and you’ll be able to tend to yourself as you so deserve. At 10 pm and with ample time to spend washing off the day’s dirt, I’ve decided to recapture this long lost aquatic relaxation method that I loved as a kid and improve it with an age appropriate spin.

To make this cleansing ritual more enjoyable I’ve turned to reviving the use of the bar soap. Lush is the place to venture if you want to reinvigorate your bath experience and rediscover the bar that has been dropped for liquid soaps. A best friend of mine has shared her love of this store with me, and for a recent birthday, she gave me Lush’s Sandstone. A quarter pumice and three-quarters citrus scented glycerin, the soap win’s my approval. While you’re bathing you can use this hybrid to surface new, softer skin. I use this bar directly against my body. It’s best if you use it on its side so that you get both the soap and the stone action. I must offer this caution: The granules can be a bit abrasive (it definitely gets the job done though!). If you have sensitive skin or aren’t in need an entire skin cell overhaul, I recommend creating a lather in your hands and then rubbing it where you see fit. My boyfriend, who proudly uses my Sandstone Bar as well, complains that it’s a bit drying. You may want to follow this exfoliating treatment with your favorite moisturizing soap and as always, smooth a hydrating lotion all over yourself to seal in the moisture from the shower. Let the water run for a short while after you’re done bathing as the sand often settles at the bottom of the tub.

I recently stumbled upon a cheaper brand of premium soap bars called Kreamy Soaps. I was at the Melrose Trading Post at Fairfax High in Los Angeles one Sunday, and I saw these amazing rustic soaps with their scent hand stamped on each individual soap. For only 2 bucks a bar, I had to take at least the Lavender Citronella home (I’m a sucker for Lavender). I enjoy my Kreamy Soap not only for the mere fact that it was all kinds of affordable, but also because it has a great slick lather accompanied by a soothing fragrance.

Both Lush and Kreamy Soaps believe in selling soaps with a conscience. They both offer cruelty free soaps void of animal products (Lush does have a honey based soap). The two companies also believe in offering a quality product. I say if you’re looking to reclaim your bath experience and treat your body right, you can’t go wrong with either brand. If you want to splurge, go with Lush. If you want to get great quality, save a buck, and support a smaller vendor, go with Kreamy Soaps.

I used to have “bathtub me time” on Sunday mornings and used lavender bath salts. Your entry reminds me that I should get back to doing that. I really want to buy some Lush bath bombs.

    P.S. Welcome Stylist Jr.!

My wife and I have never tried lush products but are addicted to Kreamy Soaps. We like super small businesses and are also vegetarians. I was posting to tell you they have some fizzy bath things that you might want to try. We haven’t gotten them - we’re shower people.
